What is spinal stenosis ?
Spinal stenosis means there is less room for the spinal cord and exiting nerve roots, typically resulting in radiating leg pain. The two major causes of radiating leg pain would be either a herniated disc or lumbar stenosis. Stenosis is typically found in the elderly population.
What are the symptoms ?
Numbness, heaviness or tingling in on leg or both legs is typical of lumbar canal stenosis, specially after prolonged walking or standing for some time. the pain goes away with rest and the aptient at times stoops forwars and walks as this decreases the claudication pain.
Will I suffer from paralysis if i Dont get it operated ?
NO, this is a chronic diease and occurs due to degernative changes in the spine such as hypertrophy of the ligamentum flavum and facet joints. it will not lead to paralysis but the qulaity of life markedly reduces as the standing and walking time decreases with time.
What is the treatment for spinal stenosis ?
The treatment for spinal stenosis involves exercises of the spine. Typically, patients who have spinal stenosis are elderly; Medically, anti-inflammatory medications and/or steroid injections can be helpful. Ultimately, the definitive treatment would be nerve decompression, or surgery to remove abnormal bone and soft tissue build up around the nerves.
